Disney’s Greatest, Vol. 1

$18.98

Disney’s Greatest Hits Vol. 1 delivers over an hour of favorite songs from films like Tarzan, Toy Story, Peter Pan, Lady & the Tramp, and more. Original recordings of classics like “Bibbidi-Bobidi-boo,” “Cruella De Vil,” “Heigh Ho,” and “When You Wish Upon a Star” mix with contemporary favorites such as “You’ve Got a Friend in Me,” “Kiss the Girl,” “A Whole New World,” and “Beauty and the Beast.” The collection puts the newer songs at the beginning — probably to immediately capture the attention of young listeners — but it would have been interesting to hear Disney’s old and new songs mixed together. Though it’s not spectacularly different from the other compilations Disney has released, Disney’s Greatest, Vol. 1 is a thoroughly enjoyable collection of classic, instantly recognizable songs for Disney fans of all ages. ~ Heather Phares, Rovi

 Live in London

Live in London

$24.98

Through most of his first decade as a recording artist, Randy Newman was a critics’ darling known to the mainstream pop audience only through the songs he wrote that were recorded by artists such as Dusty Springfield, Three Dog Night, and Harry Nilsson, his own records often being too lyrically blunt (and his vocals too froggy) for radio. Newman finally scored a hit of his own with “Short People” in 1978, but his greatest success came in the 1990s; his profitable sideline in writing film scores eventually grew into his primary occupation, and the theme songs he wrote for movies like Toy Story, Monsters Inc., Cars, and The Princess and the Frog earned him a reputation for composing warm but clever pop tunes that overshadowed his more personal work in the public eye. In recent years, Newman appears to have gone on a low-key campaign to remind folks about the music he made before hitting pay dirt with Pixar and Disney; he’s recorded two volumes of The Randy Newman Songbook in which he revisits gems from his back catalog with only his piano accompanying his vocals, and now he’s released Live in London, which documents a show from a 2008 British tour in support of the album Harps and Angels. The 22-song set list spans the whole of Newman’s recording career, including one tune from his 1968 debut LP (“Love Story”) as well as several selections from Harps and Angels, and while Newman performs eight numbers solo at the piano, on the rest he’s accompanied by the BBC Concert Orchestra, offering a generous reminder that Newman’s skill as an arranger is on a par with his gift as a composer. Newman has never possessed a traditionally “great” voice, and his instrument wavers a bit on several of these selections, but his sense of phrasing and his ability to inhabit a character is still impressive, and his piano work, perhaps the only thing Fats Domino and Aaron Copland will ever have in common, is excellent. The tone of Live in London is relaxed but confident, and Newman’…

Instead of rushing a mediocre concert album to DVD, Whitney Houston’s Greatest Hits gathers all of her videos — from “You Give Good Love” to “I Learned From the Best” — plus a CD single of “I Learned From the Best” and several hard-to-find live performances, including her 1985 debut on The Merv Griffin Show, as well as other special features. Her rendition of “The Star-Spangled Banner” from Super Bowl XXV, MTV performances of “Why Does It Hurt So Bad” and “It’s Not Right but It’s Okay” and “Impossible” from Disney’s TV production of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella are some of the other highlights of this in-depth collection. Interviews, behind-the-scenes footage, and an interactive Whitney that guides you through the disc make Greatest Hits one of the standard-bearers for music DVDs, and a must for Houston’s fans. ~ Heather Phares, Rovi

USED: The Best of Peabo Bryson [Columbia]

USED: The Best of Peabo Bryson [Columbia]

$7.98

The smooth, sultry tones of Peabo Bryson’s voice have graced many a chart-topping R&B hit throughout the past few decades. And while greatest-hits compilations often pay homage to this fact, Columbia’s latest greatest-hits installment leaves for wanting. Most of the songs included focus on the past decade of Bryson’s career, outright ignoring the late ’70s and early ’80s, which is where Bryson shined the most. Inexplicably, Peabo’s biggest hits (“Tonight I Celebrate My Love for You,” the memorable duet with Roberta Flack) are not included, which is a bit of a mystery. These are without a doubt Bryson’s finest moments as a singer and helped to skyrocket him into the upper tier of pop ballad singers. On the upside, several of Peabo’s other duets are included: two with Regina Belle, including “A Whole New World” from Disney’s Aladdin, and his duet with Celine on “Beauty and the Beast,” another Disney film. Concentrating entirely on his hits through the ’90s, this is by no means an accurate survey of Peabo’s career. For that, casual fans would be well served in checking out 2001′s Anthology, but die-hard fans will find this best-of session as an excellent supplement to the aforementioned anthology. ~ Rob Theakston, All Music Guide

My Disney CD Collection (Part 12)

Is Technology Destroying The Blues?   by Norman Sheppard

Blues music goes way back. Back to a time when slaves worked the fields for their masters and the only compensation they received was a piece of ground on which to sleep, and a piece of bread that they might live another day to work for the man. This was a hard life and many would use their music to help get them through the long hours of backbreaking work. It wasn’t until long after Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation that the musical styles of these slaves made it out of the cotton fields and into the streets and saloons.

In the early 20th century, recording technology had advanced enough to put some of these Blues musicians on record. There had been many legendary Bluesmen up to this time however their names and their music have faded into history. Only a handful of the early Blues masters were recorded and of this handful only a small percentage of the recordings have survived. Robert Johnson is perhaps the best known early blues master simply because his 1935 recordings were preserved.

As technology advanced many more recordings were made. It’s influence reached far across the states, from the Mississippi delta to Chicago, east and west, creating a new generation of musicians and culminating into the American tradition known as jazz. Blues was the popular music and it was gaining momentum. Buddy Holly, Elvis, the Beatles, the Rolling Stones and hundreds of other massively popular artists all state that the Blues was their major influence and the early recordings and performances were their inspiration.

So what happened?

Today if you were to ask a teenager who their favorite blues musician was most would shrug not knowing what the heck you were even talking about. If you asked an average teenager who Robert Johnson was they most definitely would not know. Some do not even know who the Beatles are! Some may know about B.B. King, Clapton or Stevie Ray Vaughn but these guys are old timers. Where are all the new guys, the keepers of the blues tradition and legacy?

This is the age of the free download. No album covers to look at in awe. Older folks that cling to the music of their era still hold fast the memories of buying that record and adding it to their collection and could tell you the names of dozens of bands, the rock gods they worshiped in their youth. Now the kids have iPods that hold 5000 songs most of which are by artists that they can’t even name. Most of which they will never hear from again. Little do they realize that their little computers and free downloads are preventing these musicians from making a living with their music and most of them will never be able to produce more than that one hit after which they will disappear for ever while the next wanna-be comes forth to take their chance.

Where does this leave the old Blues masters, the ones who taught us how to play, how to rock n’ roll and how to Hip Hop. It seems that if a band or musician doesn’t have their own show on the Disney channel or are backed by one of the few remaining record companies they will never get enough exposure to make enough sales to sustain a career. They may get a spot on an iPod for a few months but that just doesn’t pay.

A rich history of our country is told through music old and new but has since been reduced to faceless, temporary disc space. We owe it to ourselves to remember the Blues and not let the legacy fade like a needle in the haystack of history. We owe it to ourselves to help the new musicians earn a living doing what they do best. Americans love their music, this has not changed. Kids still like to go to concerts and rave about the latest and greatest. Kids still express and define themselves through the style of music they subscribe to. Lets do us all a favor, go out and buy a CD, better yet, buy an old Blues CD and make your kids listen to it, tell them what you know about the artist, sign them up for a blues guitar lesson. This is where all our music comes from. If you love music you owe it to yourself and to your country to preserve what’s left of the blues.
